Indian actress Shruti Haasan is set to make her international debut as a female lead in the highly anticipated British psychological thriller The Eye. Directed by Daphne Schmon, the film will have its Indian premiere as the opening feature at the 5th Wench Film Festival in Mumbai, a prestigious event dedicated to horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films.
The Eye follows the gripping journey of Diana (played by Shruti Haasan), who travels to a remote island where her husband, Felix (Mark Rowley), tragically drowned. Seeking solace by scattering his ashes, Diana’s grief soon turns into curiosity when she uncovers the mysterious ‘Evil Eye’ ritual—an ancient tradition that offers the possibility of resurrecting Felix but demands a chilling and unsettling sacrifice.
Filmed on location in Athens and Corfu, the movie’s stunning Greek landscapes heighten its eerie and suspenseful atmosphere. The film first premiered at the London Independent Film Festival in 2023 and was later featured at the Greek International Film Festival, earning global recognition for its haunting narrative and stellar performances.
On the occasion of the Indian premiere, Shruti Haasan expressed her excitement about stepping into the global cinema space. She said, “Psychological thrillers have always fascinated me. To be part of a film that explores deep human emotions, grief, and the supernatural is incredibly exciting. Beyond the gripping storyline and exceptional production quality, what makes this project even more special is that it was created under an all-women-led production house. Supporting women in the film industry is something I’m deeply passionate about. Additionally, the film embraces sustainable filmmaking practices, which is crucial for the future of storytelling.”
Director Daphne Schmon shared her perspective on the film, stating, “The Eye is both a love letter to Corfu, the island where my family is from, and an exploration of the dark psychological impulses surrounding grief. The role of Diana required an actor who could embody intense emotional depth and complexity, and Shruti Haasan was the perfect choice. Her ability to navigate Diana’s grief, paranoia, and resilience with such authenticity is truly remarkable. Only an artist of Shruti’s calibre could bring this role to life, and she has delivered a performance that will leave a lasting impact.”
Beyond its captivating narrative, The Eye is a pioneering film in multiple aspects. It is the first feature film shot in Greece with a focus on sustainability, ensuring environmentally responsible filmmaking practices. Additionally, it boasts an all-women-led creative and production team, setting a powerful precedent for female representation in global cinema.
As The Eye makes its highly anticipated Indian premiere at the Wench Film Festival, it promises to be a cinematic experience that blends psychological depth, supernatural intrigue, and breathtaking visuals.
